A Message from the President:
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an organization designed to cultivate women of all ages through service of all mankind! Over the past 114 years, AKA has grown into a force of more than more than 325,00 collegiate members and alumnae, constituting 1,061 chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, and 11 other countries. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 15th, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. At this time women of color were not allowed in organizations offered to other collegiate women. Ethel Hedgemon dreamed of creating a support network for women with like minds and combining their talents and strengths for the benefit of others in a segregated and male dominated University system. Five years later, Hedgemon’s dream was taken a step further. In 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s perpetuity was insured through Incorporation. The Ravishingly Elegant Rho Eta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered on the campus of Brenau University on May 14, 1994. Since then, Rho Eta has impacted the Gainesville community on and off campus. AKA can’t wait to meet all of you amazing women over the course of the year! |
